Active families CIC was established to tackle the current high levels of inactivity across the region in addition to reducing the number of health related issues caused as a result of leading a sedentary lifestyle. Children’s Hearing Assessment Children's Hearing Assessment clinics are available at Sunderland Royal Hospital, Washington Health Centre and Palmer Community Hospital. There is direct access hearing assessment for children under 5 years of age (and separately for 5 to 18 years). If there is concern regarding hearing at or shortly after birth, check the outcome of New-born Hearing Screen and if appropriate refer urgently (assessment is more likely to be successful if undertaken within first 12 weeks of life). Please contact the Audiology service if advice is required. This is an Audiologist led service undertaken by a professional with a British Academy of Audiology HTS qualification or equivalent in paediatric hearing assessment. Routine appointments are 30 min in duration and include relevant history, briefing of parents, appropriate behavioural audiological assessment, debrief of parents. For infants under 6 months of age a more specialised assessment is required and appointments may be up to 120 min. Following the assessment a parent/family friendly report is produced and copied to appropriate professionals. The outcome of the assessment may include discharge from service, monitoring of mild hearing loss, provision of amplification (hearing aids) and onward referral to an Ear Nose and Throat Consultant. Children’s Hearing Aid ServiceChildren's Hearing Aid clinics are available at Sunderland Royal Hospital, Washington Health Centre and Palmer Community Hospital. This is an Audiologist led service undertaken by a professional with a British Academy of Audiology HTS qualification or equivalent in paediatric hearing assessment / habilitation. Routine appointments are 60-90 min in duration and include relevant history, appropriate audiological assessment, prescription and verification of hearing aids, evaluation and arrangements for review. High quality digital sound processing hearing aids are used and real ear measurement is used to accurately prescribe them to children. A regular review of provision is provided as well as a booked repair service for maintenance.There are specialist clinics for the provision of FM/remote microphone technology and for child-adult transition services. Support clinics are also provided in the school environment.Following the assessment a parent/family friendly report is produced and copied to appropriate professionals. Criteria for accessReferrals for Children’s Hearing Assessment are via Choose and Book or by GP/Professional referral. Alternative provision for pupils aged 3 - 11 years who require intensive direct speech and language therapy and teaching to support transferable skills from therapy to teaching.  Highfield is commissioned by the Local Authority to offer 10 places for pupils aged 4 - 11 who have Specific Language Impairment.  This is offered for a time limited period for 4 days weekly.  Full details of the school's Local Offer can be found in their 'Special Educational Needs Information Report' which can be found on the school website.

Highfield Academy

The new centre, built on Hylton Road Playing Fields, offers a wide range of sporting activities and facilities for a variety of groups within the community.  The Centre provides a base for staff and volunteers to deliver a wide range of activities which aim to meet the needs of the young people attending the youth club. The diversity and range of rooms and facilities at the centre, enables the project to offer a safe place for many different activities and groups such as football, arts crafts, dance, pool and much more.  The centre also offer activities and sessions such as boxing or gym for adults. Please visit the website for more details.

North View Academy

The Nutrition and Dietetic service provides intervention for children and their families / carers for any diet related or nutritional issues.  The Paediatric Team is based at Sunderland Royal Hospital and is part of a wider dietetic service. Targeted servicesThe Nutrition and Dietetic service is commissioned to deliver a specialist weight management service for children and their families / carers who are over a healthy weight.  This service works in partnership with the Local Authority.  Specialist servicesThe Paediatric Team is able to offer dietetic intervention for all medical conditions.  All referrals are triaged to ensure children are seen by the most appropriate Dietitian. Nutrition and Dietetics

What is the paediatric disability Service? A team of consultants and trainees with expertise in paediatric disability. What does 'disability' mean? The service uses the definition from the World Health Organisation's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (usually known as the ICF). This brings together the 'medical model' of disability, which considers health conditions, body structure and function, with the 'social model' of disability, which considers factors in the environment that can be disabling, such as physical factors and peoples' attitudes.  Disability is thus something that can affect anyone at any time and can vary over time.  Using this definition of disability includes all children and young people with special educational needs as well.  Click here for more detailed information. Who can refer to the paediatric disability service? Any professional who has a concern about a child or young person's development, learning or where a disability is suspected.  Parents can seek referral via their GP, Health Visitor or any other professional involved in their care.If Nursery or School are making a referral, it is better for this to be via the GP if possible, in order to optimise communication and reduce the risk of duplication. Who should be referred to the service? Any child or young person where there is concern about development, learning or where disability is suspected.  Click here for more detailed information. Why should a child or young person be referred to the service? If there are concerns that a child or young person may have a disability or is following a different developmental journey to other children their age, it can be important to identify any health conditions or diagnoses that can be made.This is so that an explanation can be given for the child, young person and their family as to why they are different, how this might affect them now and in the future.We know that in the absence of other explanations about why a child is different, parents, especially mothers, tend to blame themselves, thinking it was something they did or didn't do when they were pregnant or in parenting that has made their child as they are.  Click here for more detailed information. What should referral to the service include? Please include a completed background information sheet.  These are designed to be completed by the family.  If need be, the Health Visitor or the person making the referral can offer support with this.  Having all of this information means that the consultation is much more efficient and effective: the family have more idea about why they are attending and hopefully have the chance to share all of their concerns. Paediatric Disability Service - City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust

We cover the west of the city and currently offer a wide and diverse range of recreational and educational opportunities for the whole community. What we doWe are a resource for the community, adopting a community development model to meet community needs. PAG is situated in one of the most deprived areas of Sunderland and currently operates a variety of projects  and prides itself on offering a wide and diverse range of recreational and educational opportunities for the WHOLE Community. We provide or facilitate courses for people of working age to enhance their employability and for everyone for social or recreational purposes.  These courses can be arranged by PAG or by external sources and are quite often free of charge to the service user.  The courses can be accredited or non-accredited and can vary in length from a couple of hours to as long as a few weeks. It is a place for the local community to come along and visit our animals and join in on our many activities that we do. The farm is not just a place where people can come and visit our animals it is also a training centre for the local community who want to do training courses and apprenticeships.
