Ashbrooke School is a co-educational, specialist day-school providing high quality education for pupils between the ages of 5 and 18 years.  The school meets the needs of a diverse group of pupils who have a range of complex educational needs, communication difficulties and challenging behaviours. Parents are welcome to contact the school directly, however referrals are made by the local authority. The school will review the referral and if they have capacity and can meet need, they will contact the LA to discuss the young person further and whether they can invite them in for a visit.  Once the school has met the young person, if they can offer a place they will let the LA know formally in writing and this will usually then need to go to panel.  If accepted, a member of staff will come and do a home visit, to get any further paperwork signed, provide school uniform and help to support the transition. Who is eligible?Young people have an Education, Health, Care Plan (EHCP) from the local authority, usually with a primary need of either:Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)Speech, Language and Communication Needs. These can include undertaking assessments, staff training, attending Internal Team Around the Child Meetings (ITACs), small group work with young people, providing therapeutic packages to be delivered by teaching assistants and also direct 1 to 1 with the therapists themselves. Class StructureWe pride ourselves on having high staff ratios and small classes to enable us to meet the needs of each young person and be able to differentiate the work accordingly. Therefore, we have no more than 8 young people in a class with a teacher and up to 2 teaching assistants. Monitoring needsWhen a referral is received, the initial needs are gathered through reading the EHCP and accompanying paperwork, liaising with professionals, as well as meeting with the young person and their family, both on a school visit and subsequent home visit. During the young person’s initial 12 weeks there will be baseline assessments which could include numeracy, literacy and wider curriculum needs, to establish what level the young person is working at and staff will be informed to make sure work is tailored. They will also have therapeutic assessments were needed, following which sensory diets and other therapeutic supports are put in place. There is a 12-week Post Admission Review to discuss how their child's progress and their educational plan going forwards. Every half term there is an Internal Team Around the Child (ITAC) meeting where all of the key professionals involved meet to discuss any progress, concerns and strategies which would best support that young person. If a young person receives therapeutic support, needs are also shared with relevant staff to ensure appropriate training is given, or strategies are provided. An Annual Review is held, which both the parents/carers and SEN Officer are invited to and any other key professionals. The progress of the young person is discussed as well as anything further that may need to be put in place. There is also an EHCP Review that takes place in this Annual Review meeting at every key-stage transition period. There are learning walks done throughout the term to monitor our teachers and teaching practices to ensure that we are providing the best education we can. Witherslack Group has a Quality Assurance and Monitoring Team who provide further advice and guidance around our teaching practices and pupil progress. The Pastoral Care Team and Family Liaison Officer provide pastoral support to the pupils and families and attend any additional meetings. Staff structureSenior Leadership – Head Teacher, Deputy Head Teacher(s), Assistant Head Teacher(s), Head of Pastoral Care – oversee the running of the school, staff management, school curriculum and all safeguarding. Pastoral Care (including Family Liaison Officer) – Provide all behaviour support, support around medication, safeguarding concerns, attendance and general support for parents. They are also supported by the Safeguarding, Behaviour and Inclusion Team within Witherslack Group. Therapy - Mental Health Practitioners, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and Psychologists (Educational or Forensic). They are also supervised and supported by the Clinical Services Team within Witherslack Group. Teachers – Teachers who teach a range of both academic and vocational subjects, including teachers of specialist subjects. Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) – Provide additional support to young people where needed. This may be through joining a specific lesson to provide extra support or through one to one and small group work for areas such as numeracy, literacy, social skills, CSE, restorative practice and recognising and managing emotions Teaching Assistants (TAs) – TAs are appointed to class groups therefore they will move around the school with the class throughout the day providing support, understanding and guidance. Admin, Maintenance and Catering Staff All staff who work with young people receive training in Autism, ADHD, Attachment Disorders, PDA and further staff are also trained in other more specialised areas, such as Dyslexia, Social Skills, Anxiety etc. All staff also receive training in Positive Behaviour Support, Safeguarding, Team Teach, First Aid and GDPR, to name a few. CommunicationWe place a great deal of importance on communicating effectively with parents and carers as we appreciate that the majority of our young people arrive and leave school by taxi. We have dedicated staff to help ensure excellent standards of communication with parents. All parents will receive regular phone calls or emails or will use a home/school diary, depending on which format best suits the parent’s needs. We ensure that communication includes lots of positives. Parents are also invited to attend a Post Admission Review in the first 12 weeks of their child starting at the school and subsequent Annual Reviews. There are also termly reports sent home on progress and targets.  Parents’ evenings take place at least once a year and this is an opportunity to meet teachers and discuss pupils’ progress and successes. Parents may also be invited to school for special assemblies, celebrations or events.  Parents are welcome to ring in to speak to the Family Liaison Officer or Pastoral Care Team or to arrange a meeting to come into the school. How do we support long taxi journeys?Most of our young people come to school via taxi. Many of them bring electronic devices to use, which they can hand in to school on arrival. We also provide driver and escort training for a number of LAs to help the drivers and escorts understand the needs of our young people and how best to support them. All pupils can have breakfast when they arrive and during this time some may have a movement break or others may have time with a particular member of staff to talk about any anxieties. This can be done again at the end of the day for those who need it. All courses are GCSEs, BTECs or equivalent accredited courses HistoryGeographyDTFood TechOutdoor EducationHair and Beauty If a young person is placed within one of our primary schools, then they will still need to be referred to the secondary school by the local authority and it is up to the LA as to whether they will transfer them, however the LA will take the parents’ preference into consideration and most of our young people do move up to our secondary school.  If the young person is in one of our through schools it is more unusual for them to be moved elsewhere by the local authority, but again this can happen if the LA think that they can meet need within one of their own maintained provisions. If a young person wants to stay for our Post 16 provision, the LA doesn’t need to make a referral, but it does need to be discussed in their transition AR. The school needs to say whether they think it is appropriate and can meet need, the parents and young person need to state that it is what they want it and the LA then need to take it to panel and agree as to whether they will fund the place. Throughout their Key Stage 4, we offer opportunities to experience career options. They will attend careers fairs, work experience placements and speak to careers advisors. They also learn how to write job applications and practice interview techniques. We will also support them with liaising with Post 16 Colleges to help them find the best courses for them. We aim to provide all of our young people with the confidence and skills to be able to go on and live independent and fulfilled lives and careers.

It is part of the Ascent Academies' Trust which is a partnership between three secondary special schools in Sunderland, one all aged school in Easington and one primary school in Billingham.

Barbara Priestman Academy

The Community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) is a team of professionals who offer assessment and treatment to children and young people around their emotional well being. Our service works with children and young people aged 0-18 years old that may be showing signs of behavioural difficulties and / or emotional distress. Difficulties include worries / anxieties, low mood, controlling anger, bereavement and lose, bullying, eating problems, self harm and relationship difficulties. The service consists of a multidisciplinary team of mental health practitioners including, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, health visitors, teachers, early years workers, counsellor and admin staff, all with additional child and adolescent mental health training. This includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Systemic Family Therapy and Person Centred Counselling. The Community CAMHS service aims to deal with such difficulties in the early stages and focuses on prevention and early intervention.  The aim is to develop skills and resilience to promote positive well being / mental health and minimise the risk of further difficulties or distress. Following the acceptance of the referral, children and young people and their families will receive an assessment from one of our clinicians.  This will allow us to make the right decisions about what happens next.  This could be individual work, group work or in some cases a transfer to Specialist Mental Health Services.  The service aim is to ensure that children and young people are seen by the right service to meet their need. The service works within the NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) guidelines around treatment interventions offered. The service has 3 locality bases across Sunderland, Washington and the Coalfield’s.  Families will be seen at the closest venue to where they live.  The service will also see children and young people and their families at other locations such as GP surgeries and schools. The service can provide consultation advice and support directly to families but also to other agencies working with children and young people presenting with mental health difficulties and will support the team around the child. Criteria for accessCommunity CAMHS is commissioned to provide a service of prevention of mental health problems, and early intervention when mental health problems occur, for children and young people aged 0-18. Aspects of clinical referrals which make them appropriate for Community CAMHS are: Mild to moderate mental health problems A brief history of presenting mental illness Lack of clearly established mental illness, but likelihood of developing one A strong community emphasis is likely to be necessary in resolving the problems An opportunity for preventative work is present There is some children and young people who may be presenting with the above but as their family circumstances maybe different they maybe more suitable for the specialist CAMHS. Health professionals, children services (including schools) and voluntary agencies referrals are accepted by letter or by strengthening families’ form which come via children’s services. Friends of the drop in for asylum seekers and refugees (FODI) is a charity that aims to improve the mental health and well-being of the asylum-seeking and refugee community of Sunderland. In doing so we hope to lessen their social isolation and promote their integration into the wider community, by supporting and extending the activities of the Drop-In currently run on Wednesday afternoons. Our registered charity number is 1176524. At FODI, we believe that everyone deserves a chance to thrive.That’s why we help asylum-seekers and refugees in Sunderland find their way in the community, whether it’s through the charity’s programmes or just by being part of something bigger than themselves. We see people who have been forced to flee their homes and are living in limbo, without support or a place to call home. We want to give them a chance to be active members of their communities again—and better yet, we want to do it together! FODI is a not-for-profit charity that provides funding for projects that improve the lives of asylum seekers and refugees in Sunderland by providing access to community resources and opportunities. FODI aims to improve the mental health and well-being of the asylum-seeking and refugee community of Sunderland. In doing so we hope to lessen their social isolation and promote their integration into the wider community, by supporting and extending the activities of the Drop-In. There they will meet our volunteers and volunteer interpreters who will give out the FODI welcome letter (translated into five major languages) go through the new arrivals information ( SEE LEAFLETS BELOW) and check whether they have a GP and solicitor; we also signpost people to ESOL and to other agencies for advice or assistance. For new families; we have volunteers who visit all new families and help them settle here by taking them to local schools and helping them register at their GP and deal with any housing issues.

FODI (Friends Of the Drop In)

Eligible to offer free 2 year old childcare places. Gail has completed a childminding course and is a qualified crèche worker. She is registered to look after babies to school age children.  Her husband is an approved assistant.  She has completed all mandatory training including First Aid and Food Hygiene and all relevant childminding training and now has NVQ Level 3 in Children’s Care, Learning and Development and level 2 in Safeguarding children. She is a member of the toy library, Millie's Minders Support Group, Diamond Hall, Highfield Children's Centre and Elim Toddler Group. Each morning they attend a play session eg. toddlers, soft play or library.  Afternoons are spent at home with themed play, free play or outdoor play, the children like to choose for themselves.  Gail takes the children to and from school, offer home cooked meals and a large variety of activities, help with homework if needed.  Gail was graded 'Good' by OFSTED with 'Outstanding' in some areas.   Gail is registered for Tax Free Childcare.

Helen is 34 and Ofsted registered Child Minder, recent Ofsted inspection: Good. Helen has undergone childminding training and has excellent knowledge of the early year’s foundation stage, making learning through play fun.  Helen has experience of working in both Schools and Nurseries when completing her GNVQ Health and Social Care course. Some time ago before Helen became a childminder, was a childminding assistant.  Helen comes from a large family including her parents, two sisters and one brother. From her teens Helen was always called upon for baby sitting from friends and family. Helen tries to make the experience at her home very enjoyable for the children in her care and has received excellent written comments/reviews from the children's parents. Helen really enjoys her job as she finds it very rewarding seeing the children in her care, grow, learn and progress. Helen and her partner, who is her assistant, have been together for eight years. Both have valid paediatric first aid and food hygiene certificates. They live in a smoke free environment, in Hastings Street, Hendon within 15 minutes walking distance to Sunderland city centre and very close to the beach. She has two cats, Jasmine and Milly (brother and sister). Helen currently has spaces available and looks after children from birth to teenagers.  Helen's home is warm, comfortable and welcoming. She gives children in her care a happy, safe, caring, educational and a playful place to be. As well as play activities. Helen focuses on children getting enough exercise during play. Helen and the children in her care go to parks, go on sensory beach walks, farms, museums. Also take part in nature walks looking out for animals such as squirrels, different kinds of birds on the way and nature quizzes for the older children. During the week Helen takes babies/toddlers to toddler groups so children socialise and develop friendships with the children who attend weekly as Helen feels this is a big part of children’s learning. There are always organised outings with the toddler group for example to farms, museums organised and funded activities. Helen has a large out door area where children can get involved in out door sensory fun activities including sand/water play, easel and messy play. The children plant and grow things in her sensory garden which has herbs and plants that produce fruits for example fig and strawberry. Helen has a large gazebo so children can play in the shade. In the summer, once children are old enough they can play in the paddling pool. Regular risk assessments are carried out of all out door activities. In the summer organised treasure hunts in the outdoor play area. During the week Helen organises age appropriate activities to help babies, toddlers and children learn and progress through play. A learning journal with photos is provided for parents. Examples crafts, painting playing and making play dough, cooking, messy play, story and nursery rhyme time activities that children are interested in. There is a variation of toys supplied to suite every age of children from birth to teens. Examples sensory toys, dress up, dolls, cars, musical instruments and books. She has a current first aid qualification.  Michelle also attends childminder and toddler groups and also soft play.  There are lots of outings to farms, parks, beaches, etc.  There is outside play both at home and at the groups.  There is also baking, messy play, sand and water play, books, computer, etc. Michelle is registered for Tax Free Childcare.

Returners is an attendance provision for secondary students unable to attend mainstream education due to poor mental health normally associated with anxiety disorders. The aim of the provision is to provide a small nurturing environment where pupils can successfully access a broad curriculum, rebuild their confidence and self esteem, with a view to a successful return to mainstream education, a specialist provision or Post 16 education. They are based in Thornhill Academy where all pupils are taught and supported by a wonderful and dedicated team of professionals who not only see pupils for who they are now but for who they can become. An application for a place can only be made by the pupil's registered school via the Central Provision Panel.  The following criteria must be met:<ul><li>The young person's attendance must be less than 50%</li><li>They must be engaged with a Mental Health Service eg. Special Olympics Sunderland supply coaching and training for youngsters with learning disabilities in swimming, judo, badminton and other sports.  We have qualified coaches in all sports.  Children and young people are encouraged to reach their full potential and enter competitions if they wish.  1-1 swimming lessons are available for age 6 years and over.Criteria for access All potential members must have a diagnosed learning disability and be aged 6 - 25 years.  All members are to be accompanied by a parent or carer.Targeted services Coaching and training for children and young people with a diagnosed learning disability.Cost to access services Fees of £4.00 per session and £20 annual membership.Please visit our website for more details.

Outreach youth provision engages with local young people acting as a stepping stone in supporting them to access existing opportunities in the ward. Workers will be walking around areas within the St. Michael's Ward such as Hill View, Grangetown, Ashbrooke, Thornhill, Tunstall.
